Disability Advice and Welfare Network (DAWN) Computer Training Tapes

VOLUME ONE comprises 4 tapes and is called Introduction to Windows.


The tutorials are presented by Brian Hartgen (an Information Technology Tutor for visually impaired people).

  • Tapes 1 and 2 give a general introduction to computing.
  • Topics included are:

  • Keyboard layout;
  • Starting a programme (Wordpad);
  • Typing, editing and selecting text;
  • Saving, loading and deleting files;
  • Printing a text file;

  • Using Help;

Tapes 3 and 4 give a guide to Windows. Topics covered are;
  • Explanation of some Windows' terminology.
  • Examples of Radio Buttons and Check Boxes.
  • Making your computer talk better - revisited.
  • Changing measurement units in Word Pad.
  • How to change margins.
  • Multi-tasking (running two applications simultaneously).
  • The concept of files and folders.
  • Exploring the hard disk.
  • Exploring a floppy disk.
  • Exploring a text-based CD-ROM.
  • Looking at the view options in Explorer.
  • Creating a folder.
  • Moving and copying files from one location to another.
  • Moving non-contiguous files and folders from one storage place to another.
  • Deleting files.
  • Renaming files.
  • Copying a disk to a disk.
  • Formatting a disk.
  • Creating a shortcut key to an existing application on the Start Menu.
  • Placing a file on the Start Menu.
  • Assigning a shortcut key to the file previously placed on the start menu.
  • The Recycle Bin.
  • Saving a file created in WordPad on the hard disk.
  • Retrieving the same file.
  • The Find Program.
  • Setting the time and date.
